Prevent festive weight gain!
According to the British Dietetic Association, research shows we can all expect to gain at least 1-2lbs during the festive season. This may come as no surprise as some of us can consume in excess of 6,000 calories on Christmas day alone..... three times the recommended daily intake!
For some of us, Christmas and New Year party season can be a month-long celebration, consisting of late nights, minimal exercise, energy-dense food and drinks; all of which contribute to weight gain. Though Christmas is a time of enjoyment, we can prevent weight gain by ensuring we get enough sleep, make sensible food choices, control alcohol intake and remain mindful of portion sizes. Researchers from the University of Birmingham and Loughborough University have also found that regular weigh-ins during the festive period can prevent us from piling on extra pounds... so some sage advice may just be to dust off those bathroom scales and plan regular checks.
Top tips to reduce festive weight gain.
Get your Zzz's. Sleep deprivation can increase the feeling of hunger and the desire to choose high-energy, carbohydrate- rich foods.
Avoid skipping meals. In order for your body to burn calories throughout the day, you need to ensure that you consume regular meals to provide your body with sufficient fuel. If you have an indulgent meal planned, avoid skipping meals beforehand; instead choose lighter, low-calorie meals that consist of lean proteins and lots of vegetables!
Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated so that you don't confuse thirst with hunger.
Limit liquid calories. Choose low-calorie beverages such as water, unsweetened soft drinks, tea or coffee (made with low-fat milk), herbal, green or fruit teas.
Stay physically active. We understand it can be difficult to fit that gym session into the festive calendar, but you can still find ways and means to move.
-Take the stairs instead of the lift or escalator.
-Go for a brisk walk during your lunch break.
-Instead of choosing your care for short journeys, why not walk or cycle instead.
Don't ditch the scales. Documenting your weight on a regular basis will make you aware how much of an effect the festive season is having on your weight. This in turn, can make you become more mindful when making food and beverage choices.
